  1. An article on page D3 of the May 17 Lincoln Journal reminded me of one of the points we discussed the previous Thursday--Ilyitch's feelings about the house he had built.

    In 1886 Judge MacFarland had a house built on what is now 13th and Q. It was known as "the wonder of Lincoln"--wood panels imported from a different country for each room, ornate glass, etc. It is said that he quickly became so disillusioned with the house that he taught his parrot to squak "Damn fool" whenever he entered the room.
